In October of 2007, Legio IX hispana was very pleased to announce that we would be presenting a three month long series of displays at The Muzeo - a new museum in Anaheim, California.

We worked with experts in the fields of Roman jewelry, cooking and domestic arts - a very rewarding and humbling experiece - and one not soon forgotten.

Over the course of 31 days of display, we amassed over 1200 hours of volunteer time - something that few other reenactment clubs would be able to accomplish.

We would like to thank the Muzeo staff and the members of the public who attended, for making this such a wonderful experience for us.

Etaoin is weaving a new fascia ventralis or waist sash for her husband, Centurio Hibernicus. For those interested, it is a 4 over 4 basketweave, using 40/2 linen. Here she is beating the weft down.

A view of the soapstone weights for the loom. These were worked using handtools.

We've done several special nighttime events at the Muzeo. Saturnius watches the fire in one of our Pompeii braziers.

A view of the bread oven at night.

The forge at night - such a cheery sight. Unfortunately, there was a brisk 15 to 18 knot breeze that threw sparks everywhere. Picturesque, but annoying.

Part of lunch - a vegetable stew.

Another lunchtime favorite from Apicius - baked leeks and apples in honey.

A pleasant surprise - fresh mackerel - stuffed with dates, figs and home-made goat cheese - baked on planks in the oven.

The fish didn't last long!.

Hibernicus forging another dolabra head.

A closer view of the dolabra head.

Our new friend Daniel takes a swing at smithing, under Hibernicus' watchful eye...

Daniel is already looking for that promotion!

Scipio explains the onager to some museum patrons.

Lunch. Fresh-baked spelt flatbread, sausages, roasted garlic, a flatbread covered with goat cheese, fresh basil and sausage. Dessert is apples - baked or fresh.

A closer view of the flatbread, and some of our mess kit. We eat exceedingly well.

Some items from our engineering display - which includes the block and tackle from our 16' cargo crane.

Sanguinarius takes his turn at the bellows.

Hibernicus works at shaping a pila shaft.

The oven is an integral part of our display - hard work makes for hungry Romans. Notice the nice layer of soot - we have been busy.

Lunch - fresh bread and homemade sausages, based on an Apician recipe

Scipio et Hibernicus chatting with visitors

Armouring work station - Saturnius is finishing up his segmentata.

Our military handcrafts station - including slings, bullets, wrought nails, scutum covers and more.

Our oven - fully functional, but not yet finished. We need to cover it with plaster to weatherize it a bit, since it will be in place for three months.

Another view of the oven - right after the last loaves of the day came out.

The foods station - you can see what's left of the flat loaf of spelt bread (to the right).

Scithius making rope - in a 25 knot breeze. This is not recommended, by the way

Saturnius, Daniela and Sanguinarius taking a well-deserved break after being mobbed by curious visitors.
